You know, it’s almost a shame that I don’t actually have a Master System lying around any more…

Well, perhaps not.

So, I went to see that Blood: The Last Vampire movie yesterday. I also went to see Transformers 2, but I don’t really want to talk about that. Well, I don’t particularly have much to say about Blood either – cheap special effects aside, the first half of the movie was pretty good, whilst the second half decidedly wasn’t. Part of it is just that they tried to do way more than their limited special effects could handle (the fight on the truck wedged in the ravine was painful in a number of places for this reason), but really it just suffers from the fact that, as Blood stood as an OAV, there’s a real lack of material. As soon as they headed off into material that had no basis in the original work it just fell apart.

This isn’t to say that the original Blood had a particularly good story – it didn’t, as Blood was pretty much just an excuse for Production IG to show off all the new animation kit they’d just had installed at the time. It’s the attempts to actually give Blood a story without retconning the hell out of it the way Blood+ did that’s the problem here, in so much as they’ve basically just thrown together a whole bunch of genre tropes together in an attempt to give it something like a narrative. The result is almost excruciatingly twee for such a violent movie. Really, they’d have been far better off not attempting anything like characterisation or working in an actual plot and just went for flat-out gratuitous violence – it’d have been shorter and far more entertaining.

It was still more fun than Transformers, though.
