Oh, Natsu no Arashi, how I love you for helping keep Saki withdrawal at bay.
I was going to play a good, old game of spot the reference this week, just like old times, but, the sequence where Jun ran down the corridor past, like, half the cast of School Rumble kind of took the fun out of that one.

Still, the animation for that sequence was pretty neat. Not especially on model, but you don’t see many TV anime going for such long, moving camera shots with lots of angle changes and actual people in the background, much less in Shaft productions where the animation budget can often doesn’t seem to stretch as far as actual animation.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to get entirely too excited at the appearance of mahjong in this episode… It did a pretty good job of giving Saki a run for its money too! I loved that chase sequence as well, pure class in an otherwise pretty good but not amazing episode.

What’s Natsu no Arashi actually about? For some reason I thought it had something to do with time travel… Is there an ongoing story or is it just a gag show?

All of the above, really. It’s about the ghost of a girl who died during WW2 for some reason and only materialises during the summer, who in conjunction with a (living) boy can travel backwards through time. Then there’s more ghosts and stuff. Then occasionally they’ll just throw out a whole episode of bizarre humour (like the first episode of the first season…)
