Boobs to hit R1

Really, Funimation? Dragonaut? Seriously? Was it cheap? Were you forced to pick it up as part of a package deal? Have you merely gone crazy?

Slightly more interesting is probably the fact that they’ve also picked up the two Duraga series and Blassreiter, both of which have been available to watch for free over Crunchy Roll amongst other sources. I kind of figured these shows, no matter how popular they may become, would just linger in limbo as far as DVD releases go. If nothing else, it probably gives those looking for an R1 DVD release of Strike Witches something of a glimmer of hope. It’ll be interesting to see how well these shows sell.

They also grabbed Bamboo Blade, but in light of the licensing of Dragonaut, it’s hard to particularly care over the sound of my own laughter.

Maybe this is part of Gonzo’s plan to overhaul the company, and Funimation actually did buy them all on the cheap, at some Licensor’s Clearing House event, or wherever those in the business of buying and selling anime titles go to work.

In this scenario, at least Funimation is still clinging on to its last vestiges of pride by NOT licensing Pantsu Witches?

Given how desparate Gonzo must be for revenue right now, I’ll bet Funi got a really good deal.

More likely, Gonzo actually want money for Strike Witches, since its actually been selling…

Heh, I’ve been using that for a while, but I guess since I don’t have a Twitter or the ilk no-one tends to see it ^^;

I’m sure that what happened was that Gonzo had a fire sale, and offered a package deal on all the series at a good overall price.

I won’t be surprised if Strike Witches was included in it, with an announcement coming in a few days. But did they also get Rosario to Vampire?

With all the success and plaudits Strike Witches has been receiving in Japan, though, it’s a completely different case to the shows they’ve announced here – Dragonaut is mostly famous for how bad it is, and Blassreiter, whilst apparently not all that bad, didn’t really do anything in Japan. Duraga is a bit out of place here, but it’s still no Strike Witches in terms of popularity or success.

I won’t deny that this news does make it sound like SW will be hitting R1 at some point eventually, I can’t help but think it’s a little too soon for Gonzo to selling on their one really successful property of recent years into a market where the R2 cost will be undercut drastically. I’m not convinced we’ll see it licensed (or at least announced as licensed) whilst it’s still an active property in Japan, and the final volume of the show isn’t even out on DVD in Japan for a couple of weeks yet.

That said, I also wouldn’t have expected RightStuf to not only have licensed, but also announced, that they’re releasing the forth season of MariMite before even the first disk has hit in Japan, either.

If there really was a mass deal, with all the series bundled, then either the price would have to be ridiculously low or else there would need to be a gold nugget included to make it worthwhile to accept all the others.

Strike Witches might have been that nugget. I guess we’ll find out in a few days.

From an R1 sales point of view, I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if something like Duraga wasn’t the golden nugget in this lot, rather than Strike Witches. I really don’t see Strike Witches having a whole lot of appeal outside of core-fandom outside Japan.

They can have Paris Hilton voicing someone. Or Natalie Portman. That would surely sell 100,000 volumes (although perhaps not break even :-).

Hmmm, how many big names have actually dubbed anime titles which weren’t Ghibli pictures? The only thing I can think of was that Armitage III movie dub that had Kiefer Sutherland and Elizabeth Berkley, but neither of them particularly had a career at the time (and that was, like, more than a decade ago).

Indeed. I was just thinking in terms of the R1 distributor needing a bold gambit.

It HAS to be a package deal, which is also what my assumption is for why they licensed Glass Fleet back in 2006.
