Mikan Watch #42: Rin – Daughters of Mnemosyne

From the second episode. It’s not exactly the kind of bright and breezy show from which I’d normally expect to be striking Orange gold, but rest assured, the owner of this particular Mikan Box was brutally beaten and hospitalized shortly before it appeared. Off-screen, of course – it’s not like he was female.

Yeah, Mnemosyne certainly earns the 18 certificate the BBFC gave it like nothing else in recent memory. It’s actually incredibly nostalgic in a certain sense – it harkens back to the days where seeing the Manga Video logo on the cover generally suggested that you’d be getting tits, violence and inordinate amounts of swearing. I don’t know about the later since I watch it subbed, but it certainly provided plenty of the former two.

Beyond that, though, the show just feels like one of those 90s OAV shows Manga used to release. It has the same kind of look to the visuals and feel to the animation. It tells the same kind of stories, too, and the double-length episodes give it very much the same kind of pacing. It’s kind of refreshing, really. Well, not the parts where, being kind of squeamish, I found watching through my fingers, but on the whole it is a very different show to most of the titles we’ve seen in recent years. I certainly couldn’t watch nothing but shows like Rin, but as the occasional antidote to all the moe shows, it’s a welcome change of pace.

Also, the inflation in computer specs over the decades the show spans is pretty hilarious (the particular episode above being set in the early 1990s).
